Can You Use Oil On Oily & Acne Skin?

Yes, you read that right.  There are plant oils that you can use on oily and acne prone skin.  One of the more common beauty myths is the claim that putting oil on your face will make it oilier and more prone to breakouts.

While applying oil to skin that is already oily sounds counterinitiative, there are plant oils that can be your saving grace.  Using the right oils can replenish your skin, which can balance the skins production of oil and keep breakouts at bay.

Oily Skin Needs Oil

The thought of putting oil on my oily cystic acne prone skin was frightening!  Believe me, even after months of research and trial formulations, I still was not convinced.  But after a few days of using the right combination of oils, turns out these magic elixirs did wonders for my skin.

For decades I was led to believe that drying up my skin would give me the clear skin I yearned for. Truth is, that when skin is deprived of oils, it will go into overproduction mode to make up for the lack of sebum.  Drying out my skin, skipping the moisturize, and using harsh stripping ingredients kept my skin in chaos.  It led to more oil and even more breakouts.

Choosing The Right Oils

When you use the right combination of oils, it can help replenish your skins natural oils, which can keep production balanced and breakouts at bay.  They keep skin hydrated and plump.  These amazing ultra-luxe elixirs provide anti-inflammatory and antibacterial benefits, which help to reduce redness, inflammation, discolorations, and inflection.  Facial oils seal in moisture, add a layer of protection and transform skin from dull to dazzling.  Contrary to popular belief, using the right oils will not clog pores or make your skin even oilier.

Here are some of the best plant oils that are used in the Oily Acne Prone Skincare Collection.

Oils For Oily Acne Skin

JOJOBA OIL (Pronounced ho-ho-ba): Jojoba Oil is a lightweight oil remarkably similar to the natural oil (sebum) our skin produces.

Jojoba oil has a non-greasy feeling that penetrates quickly to help balance the release of the skin’s natural sebum. It naturally moisturizes and heals skin while minimizing pore size. It is beneficial for all skin types including sensitive and oily skin and helps prevent premature aging and wrinkling.

NEEM OIL: Neem Oil is a prized oil that contains significant antiseptic, antibacterial, and anti-fungal, properties. Although it smells funky (a bit garlicky), it is amazingly effective in treating a wide range of skin ailments such as eczema, psoriasis, acne, and rosacea.

It is rich in fatty acids and glycerides and although it is a very thick oil, it doesn’t clog pores.  Neem promotes new tissue formation and accelerates healing, which makes it a fantastic ingredient to combat blemishes and cysts.

TAMANU OIL (Avoid if you have nut allergies): Tamanu oil is a remarkable topical healing agent with antineuralgic, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antibiotic, and antioxidant properties.  It has been widely used on burns, insect bites, chapped skin, eczema and psoriasis.

What we like most about Tamanu is that it promotes new tissue formation and accelerates healing of healthy skin cell regeneration.  This makes it a remarkable ingredient that successfully fades acne scars and stretch marks when used regularly.

ROSEHIP SEED OIL: Rosehip oil is very high in essential fatty acids, retinoic acid (a derivative of retinol or Vitamin A), and Vitamin C. This rich and powerful oil regenerates skin cells, reduces scars, wrinkles, sunspots, UV damage, and premature aging.

Some formulators would not recommend using Rosehip Seed Oil in formulations for oily and acne skin.  However, we have found the magic is in the percentage used and have witnessed the outstanding result firsthand.

MACADAMIA NUT OIL (Avoid if you have nut allergies): This is another lightweight oil that resembles the skin’s sebum, so it is beneficial to use in facial applications for oily and combination skin types.

It has a non-greasy feeling that penetrates quickly and helps increase hydration and maintain skins moisture barrier.  Macadamia oil helps balance the release of natural oils while promoting cell growth.

HEMP SEED OIL: Hemp Carrier Oil is reputed to refresh, revive, and strengthen the skin.  Additionally, it helps even out the complexion, enhance its texture and appearance, while maintaining its suppleness and softness.

This magnificent oil helps reduce redness, inflammation, and the appearance of scars while promoting healing.  We use this in formulations for acne, dry skin, eczema, and psoriasis.

EVENING PRIMROSE: Evening Primrose is rich in Omega-6 essential fatty acids which are essential for cell structure.  Evening Primrose Oil soothes and moisturizes the skin, scalp, and hair while enhancing elasticity. Furthermore, it promotes a healthy, clear, rejuvenated complexion with enhanced radiance and addresses roughness, wrinkles, redness, dryness, and irritation. It facilitates the healing process, reduces the appearance of scars, and calms inflammation.

Oils and Butters To Avoid

There are some oils and butters that are too rich and thick and to use on your facial skin if you prone to blemishes and shine.  Using them can cause a reaction or worsen an existing condition.  This does not mean you cannot use them on other areas of your body, especially during the cold dry months. Just avoid your face:

Avocado Oil, Canola, Coconut Oil (Cold Pressed), Rice Bran, Shea Butter, Mango Butter, and Cocoa Butter, just to name a few.
