Tips For Managing Eczema and Psoriasis During the Holidays

During the winter holidays, managing eczema and psoriasis can be challenging.  The colder temperatures and drier air during this time of year already wreaks havoc on your condition.  Add in the holiday stress and festivities which can cause flare-ups, adding to the irritation and aggravation.

Here are some simple strategies to help you keep your skin hydrated and happy:

Avoid hot baths and showers: Hot water can dry out your skin, so try to keep your showers or baths lukewarm.

Avoid harsh soaps and cleansers including your shampoo: Harsh soaps and cleansers can strip away the natural oils in your skin, so opt for gentle or moisturizing cleansers instead. Better yet, switch to a moisturizing bar of Goat’s Milk Soap.

These incredible bars are made with all-natural ingredients such as goats milk, plant oils and plant butters. Each bar produces a mild, skin-nourishing cleansing experience, while offering a long-lasting magnificent lather.  These gentle soap bars leave skin feeling clean, refreshed, and radiantly healthy. Moisturize after a shower or bath and throughout the day: This is key! Make sure to use a moisturizer that’s formulated specifically for eczema and psoriasis such as Neem Cream or Sensitive Skin Baby’s Goat Milk Lotion.  During the winter months it’s better to use a heavy cream over a lotion.

Care for raw, cracked skin and open wounds differently: If your skin is raw, cracked or has an open wound, choose a wax-based moisturizer (known as ointments or balms) over a water-based lotion or cream that will cause your skin to sting or burn.

Wax based moisturizers, Procure Psoriasis & Eczema Repair Balm, Baby Dry Skin & Eczema Relief Balm, Cuticle & Nail Cream, and the Foot Repair Lotion Stick will help skin heal quicker by locking in the moisture while adding a layer of protection so that the surface can heal.  Once healed, you can apply water-based lotions and creams.

Use a gentle exfoliator to remove dead skin cells: Exfoliating restores skin bringing relief to skin disorders such as severe dry skin, eczema and psoriasis; it is the natural way to youthful glowing skin, your an anti-aging go to.  Removing dead skin cells will also help your moisturizers work better.

You can easily exfoliate your skin while you shower or bathe by using a gentle goat’s milk soap bar with added exfoliates such as our Himalayan Salt Soap or The Exfoliator For Men with ground oat kernels. Find the complete list of exfoliating soaps here.

Wear Sunblock: Even in the winter, the sun’s rays can still damage your skin. So, it’s important to wear sunblock on exposed skin even when the weather is cold.

Use a humidifier: Humidifiers can help to add moisture to the air and help to keep your skin from drying out.

Focus on eating your veggies and fruits.  It takes a tremendous amount of self-discipline to control all the temptations that surround us during the holidays.  We consume a lot of meat, fish, dairy, eggs, cheese, processed foods, and alcohol which cause painful flare ups that can take weeks to get under control.

Eating seven or more servings of vegetables and fruits each day is a great way to help fill your stomach with nutritionally dense foods.  Compared with other snack foods (like chips, crackers and cookies), vegetables and fruits not only contain fewer calories, but they have more nutrients and fiber that will fill you up faster than traditional snack foods.

Don’t forget to drink water: Staying hydrated is key to keeping your skin healthy. Make sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day.

By following these tips, you can help to keep your skin hydrated and healthy during the holidays.
