Rosacea: Strategies For Coping With The Holidays

Tis the season for a rosacea flare-up.  If you are one of the millions of Americans dealing with rosacea, the changing weather combined with the hectic holiday season can wreak havoc on rosacea.  Here are some tips & strategies for navigating the upcoming holiday season successfully.

ROSACEA

For most people the primary signs of rosacea can be a flushed and reddened face, whitehead-like pimples, rough bumps, cheeks crisscrossed with red filigrees of broken capillaries and in severe cases, a thickening of the skin.

AVOID ROSACEA TIGGERS

During the winter and holiday season, managing your exposure to the triggers that cause rosacea can be challenging.  So, it’s important to be mindful of your mental and physical healthy.

Most people suffering with rosacea have identified stress as the number one tripwire for flare-ups.  For some its beverages like hot coffee and tea, for others it’s cocktails or red wine.  Other well-known triggers include spicy food, sun exposure and heat. Do your best to minimize or avoid known triggers while celebrating.

Focus on eating your veggies and fruits.  It takes a tremendous amount of self-discipline to control all the temptations that surround us during the holidays.  We consume a lot of meat, fish, dairy, eggs, cheese, processed foods, and alcohol which can result in painful flare ups.

Try eating seven or more servings of vegetables and fruits each day is a great way to help fill your stomach with nutritionally dense foods.  Compared with other snack foods (like chips, crackers, and cookies), vegetables and fruits not only contain fewer calories, but they have more nutrients and fiber that will fill you up faster than traditional snack foods.

ROSACEA HOLIDAY SKINCARE GUIDE

First and foremost you should also be mindful of your skincare products and how to use them should a flare-up occur.  Switch to chemical and fragrant free or products if you aren’t using them already.  When you have a flare up, don’t try to calm and clear skin by adding exfoliants and masks to your skincare regimen. Less is better until your condition calms down, so keep it simple and stay on top of your skincare.

Avoid hot baths and showers: Hot water can dry out your skin, so try to keep your showers or baths lukewarm.

Avoid harsh soaps and cleansers including your shampoo: Harsh soaps and cleansers can strip away the natural oils in your skin, so opt for gentle or moisturizing cleansers instead.

Product Recommendations:

Instantly calm and refresh with a toner: Toners are usually a skincare step that people tend to overlook, especially for those with rosacea.  But they can be super beneficial, especially when they are made specifically for sensitive and rosacea skin types.

Face toners prep the skin for moisturizers and serum while getting rid of excess oil and stubborn dirt or makeup leftover on your face after you wash it.  But they’re not a replacement for washing your face.  They also help to balance the production of oil and the pH of skin.

Toners are not a one-size-fits-all product. The reformulated toners of today are used to target a varying array of skin concerns. When choosing a toner, make sure to stay away from those that contain drying alcohols that can trigger flare-ups for people with rosacea.

Our Toning Mist for Sensitive and Rosacea Skin combats redness and dryness as it instantly soothes and calms while reducing inflammation.  It’s great for people who experience breakouts immediately after exposure to heat, cold, wind, and UV.
