How To Get Rid of an Itchy Scalp Once and For All!
If you are dealing with an itchy, flaky scalp, you are not alone. In a study conducted by NCBI, National Center of Biotechnology Information, estimates show that at least 50 million Americans suffer with dandruff.
Besides the physical discomforts, dandruff can be socially embarrassing, having a negative effect on a persons’ quality of life in the form of psychological distress or low self-esteem, and a willingness to pay for relief of the symptoms.
WHAT CAUSES DANDRUFF
Before you can treat dandruff, you need to get an understanding of the cause. There are two conditions that lead to an itchy scalp; psoriasis and seborrheic dermatitis.
Psoriasis is a chronic skin disease in which skin cells grow quickly and accumulate on the surface of your skin. Psoriasis patches are thick, red skin with silvery scales that can be itchy and tender to the touch and most commonly found on knees and elbows, but they can also show up on the scalp.

Seborrheic Dermatitis is another skin condition that can cause rough, scaly skin on the scalp and face. The common name for seborrheic dermatitis is dandruff. It’s usually found on the scalp and face, but it can appear elsewhere. It causes itchy patches of scaly skin that look white or yellow with a greasy appearance
THE BURDEN TO TREAT DANDRUFF
Americans send $300 million annually on over-the-counter products to treat scalp itching and flaking. While seborrheic dermatitis is much less prevalent, outpatient office visits alone cost $58 million in the United States in 2004, and $109 million were spent on prescription drugs according to the NCBI study.
Together with over-the-counter products and hospital services, the total direct costs of seborrheic dermatitis were estimated to be $179 million, plus another $51 million indirect costs in the form of lost work days. In addition, because seborrheic dermatitis frequently occurs on the face and other visible areas, the willingness to pay for relief of the symptoms was $1.2 billion.
Treat and Manage Dandruff Naturally
While there is still no known medical cure for psoriasis or seborrheic dermatitis and the symptom of dandruff, many functional doctors believe that psoriasis and seborrheic dermatitis arise from a build-up of toxins in the system which then manifest itself on and through the skin (a condition known as Leaky Gut Syndrome). So to rid oneself of the symptom, one must treat the cause… Learn to repair Your Leaky Gut by Dr. Axe
While there is no quick fix route for psoriasis or seborrheic dermatitis, there is a natural way to treat and manage dandruff without chemicals and costly medications.
Most commercial shampoos are nothing more than fragrant dish detergents. Many shampoos rely on petrochemical detergents such as sodium lauryl/laureth sulfate for their foam-building properties because they are inexpensive, but these products remove oil from the scalp and damage hair, further irritating an already irritated scalp if you are dealing with psoriasis or seborrheic dermatitis. Just how do you use a bar shampoo?
Just like normal shampoo – wet your hair thoroughly. Take the bar and run it under the water, then rub the bar between your hands to create a rich foamy lather. At this point you can either rub the bar around your head until you create more later to wash your hair and scalp or just take the later you create in your hands and rub the lather on your hair to wash. You are washing your hair with the foamy lather. If you are new to using a shampoo bar we suggest that you start with by washing with the lather and not rubbing the bar of soap on your hair. You run the risk of having a gummy feeling if you don’t rinse off the soap properly. Rinse your hair thoroughly and repeat if desired and condition as needed. Make sure you don’t rush through the rinsing.
