Shine Control: How to Control Oily Shiny Skin During Summer

While most of us love summer, there are some that aren’t fans because of what heat and humidity does to their skin.  For those with oily and combination skin, summertime can be a nightmare. Controlling oily shiny skin during the heat and humidity can be challenging. But, with the right skincare routine and habits, you can keep your skin looking matte and fresh. Here are some tips to help you control oily shiny skin in hot and humid weather.

Oily Skin Type

Facial skin has the most concentrated number of sebaceous glands, so the shine shows most prominently there.  On a good note, oily skin has some benefits.  Sebum helps preserve skin, and people with oily skin have thicker skin and fewer wrinkles.  The key is to strike a balance between having too much oil and maintaining your skin’s natural moisture while staying shine-free. Here are some tips to help you control oily skin in hot and humid weather:

To keep your face from looking oily this summer, follow these effective tips to shine-proof your skin:

  1. WASH RIGHT
Wash your face every evening, morning and after you exercise with a mild, gentle cleanser formulated to balance the production of oil. Find Our complete line of facial skincare products for oily acne skin here.

  2. STOP DRYING YOUR SKIN OUT
Stay away from commercial products; cleansers, moisturizers, makeup, and treatments that promise to get rid of your oily skin with magical ingredients that end up doing more harm than good.

People with oily skin “naturally” produce a lot of oil (sebum) and you cannot change this.  Commercial products that contain harsh drying chemicals will only irritate your sensitive skin more and trigger increased oil production.

  3. “OIL FREE” ISN’T ALWAYS YOUR BEST FRIEND
Again, Oily Free products contain other chemicals ingredients that can irritate your sensitive skin.  Instead, use natural products that are formulated with lightweight oils such as jojoba, macadamia nut, hazelnut, sea buckthorn, and evening primrose that mimic sebum and help to neutralize and balance oil production.

  4. MOISTURIZE DAILY TO KEEP SKIN HYDRATED
Yes, you can and should use “natural” moisturizers on your oily acne prone skin.  Natural moisturizers for oily skin are made with lightweight oils and other key ingredients that, once again, will neutralize and balance oil production.  Our oily acne facial moisturizer contains Zinc Oxide that provides sunblock from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays and also mattes the surface for shine-free skin.

  5. BLOT AND SPRITZ
Blot your skin throughout the day, especially in the afternoon. There’s no need to purchase expensive blotting papers, make your own using cut up tissue paper.  Follow your blotting with a spritz or two of our soothing and refreshing toning mist for oily skin. It’s an incredible and effective way to calm skin while minimize the pores and reducing shine.

  6. GIVE YOURSELF A FACIAL
Exfoliate once a week.  We recommend one of our All-Natural Cleansing Facial Scrubs that removes dead skin and cleanse out pores while improving tone and texture.  It leaves skin feeling soft and smooth and looking radiant.

Get Muddy once a week with Pore Minimizing Facial Mask that removes blackheads and blemishes while minimizing pores and visibly reduces oil production.

  7. WATCH WHAT YOU EAT
Oily skin is sensitive skin and what you put in your mouth matters.  Dial back on foods that are high in fat, especially dairy, foods that are prepared with oil, and processed foods.  They won’t do your skin any good.  For more information on all visit Nutritional Fact
