Are Facial Toners Necessary?

When it comes to facial skin care, one of the most asked questions I receive from clients is “Do I really need to use a facial toner?” My answer is always the same, YES! As a matter of fact, toning is an essential step in any healthy skincare regimen.

But I’ve come to realize that most people (even those that might be using one now) might not have a clear understand of the how and why they should use a skin toner. Admittedly, as a young adult when I first dove into the world of skin care, toners felt like a “should” without a clear understanding of the reason why. That was until skincare became my life and industry experts had explained the powerful properties behind my facial toner.

Facial toners play a crucial role in maintain healthy skin. And as we all know, a healthy and hydrated complexion should be a key focus if your goal is radiant, ageless skin. Toners have the power to take years off your life. This step in your skincare routine can transform dull and dry skin and balance skin’s oil production to eliminate breakouts and reduce shine.  Take this opportunity to learn why our natural skin toners are a great follow up to cleansing your skin.

Before you dive into the toner world, it’s crucial to pick the one that works best for your skin type. Choosing the right kind of toner for your skin and using it daily is very important for hydration and anti-inflammation.

Everyone can benefit from using a facial toner, especially if you skin falls on either the dehydrated or oily end of the skin type spectrum.  Oily and dehydrated skin can get the most benefit by using a toner to balance out oil and water distribution on the skin and avoid dehydration since dehydrated oily skin produces more oil, leading to breakouts.

Oily, Acne or Combination Skin – Use a toner that has astringent properties that remove excess oil, reduce oil production, and that fights acne. Using a toner with astringent ingredients is critical for oily skin as it helps “clean and tighten your pores, making it harder for debris and dirt to penetrate your skin and cause irritation or breakouts.

Dry, Damaged or Sensitive Skin – Use a toner formulated with botanical waters and extracts that restores the skin and fights against aging by locking in moisture.

I think it’s safe to say, that most of us want to keep our skin care regime simple. Why add a step or product if our complexion isn’t going to benefit?  The good news is that toners come with a whole range of benefits, including glowing, anti-aging magic.

Facial Toners should be used as a foundation for the rest of your skincare routine. Using the right toner will balance your skin’s pH levels and minimize the appearance of pores while repairing your skin barrier. Even more, they allow your skin to more effectively absorb any moisturizer or serum that you apply afterward.

When toners first came to the market, they often contained harsh alcohols that left the skin dry and irritated, increasing inflammation and exacerbating conditions such as eczema, acne, and rosacea.

They are made with a variety of natural ingredients that lead to youthful-looking skin.  Some of these ingredients buff away any dryness or flakiness, while others moisturize, leaving you with fresh, glowing skin.

Additionally, our tones for oily and combination skin help to remove excess oil, shrink pores, and tighten cell gaps to reduce the penetration of environmental contaminants into the skin.  Our toners for dry mature skin contain humectants, which help bind moisture to the skin, resulting in a refreshed and youthful look.

A toner should be applied right after you cleanse the skin and before any serums and creams. Toners are supposed to bring your skin pH to a slightly acidic level, because it is usually more alkaline after washing, which can cause bacteria growth and breakouts. That being said they can also be used throughout the day as a refreshing pick-me-up especially during the summer months or in areas where there is year-round heat and humidity.
